IC INFORMATION
Character Name: Sam Winchester
Canon: Supernatural
Canon Point: Season 10, Episode 23
Age: 32
Background: Wiki
Arrival Scenario: Solvunn - if this is allowed, otherwise back to Free Cities is fine
Suitability:
Sam, like his brother, is very actively involved in the world around him, regardless of his actual interest (which can often be very low). While he is arguably reticent to engage in the greater chaos in his own world – ends of the world, apocolypses, other catastrophes that don't pluralize well – Sam has a kind and caring heart at his core and wouldn't be able to stand by for long without helping out, especially where his friends and family are involved. Despite this, he trends towards being unscrupulous in his means, so it is very likely that Sam will not only find a way to help, but also holds within him the likelihood to create a schism between several schools of thought. It's never far from Sam's mind that his opinion is usually unpopular but ultimately right (whether he wants it to be or not). It keeps him speaking his mind and acting, mostly for fear that doing nothing at all will mean he’s ultimately accused of contributing to more difficult times for others. He’s only really desperately selfish when he knows he can properly walk away.
On his first run, he was able to get a better understanding of the nuance involved with, and the dynamics between the different factions (and governments), and it allowed Sam to accept in some ways that the presence of the Summoned might actually be beneficial to not only the natives, but the Summoned themselves. He's seen lifelong warriors, like his brother and friends, finding ways to better Abraxas for everyone while finding some measure of peace within themselves. While he doesn't know what the future holds, what time Sam has spent in the Free Cities has allowed him to become more attuned to this new challenge, as well as the new life it provides.
Powers:
All latent. Premonitions (uncontrollable, painful visions of violent deaths); telekinesis; ability to exorcise demons with the use of his mind; preternatural will.
PERSONALITY QUESTIONS
Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.
There’s arguments to be made that it’s the death of Sam’s mother, Mary Winchester, might be considered the most important event in Sam’s life, but the loss of his college girlfriend, Jessica Moore, is more so a catalyst for change within Sam. Losing Jessica leads Sam back to a path he’d long since diverged from (both physically and emotionally). In his grief and anger, Sam really never recovers to the life he was hoping to have with Jessica – a life outside of violence and chaos and personal destruction. It’s also at this time that Sam takes what can only be considered the worst hit he can take, personally speaking, wherein he’s forced to eschew the life he wants for a life more aligned with a destiny picked by anyone but him. This generally persists well after this initial incident.
Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?
Sam, strangely enough, has his own moral code. It’s colored by his life experience, and while Sam himself manages to be outwardly gregarious, his morals are a bit loser than his brother’s. At times he has set aside anything resembling moral responsibility in order to achieve a satisfactory end. That’s not to say Sam won’t make the right decision, but he cannot be relied upon to make the culturally moral decision when his personal morals so thoroughly tinge his outlook on the world.
What quality or qualities do they admire most?
Particularly in his brother, Sam admires loyalty (something he does not feel he ultimately possesses in enough of a quantity to count for himself). It’s not only the loyalty to people – a steadfast faith that your chosen family will do right by you as you will by them – but loyalty to ideas as well. Unlike Dean, Sam doesn’t always easily make every choice based on others or the greater good, both of which lie firmly in the territory of loyalty from his perspective. His first answer is almost always a selfish answer then disregarded as Sam re-aligns himself as necessary to fit his current narrative. This is essentially subverted with Dean – Sam is truly allegiant to his brother – but only up to a point where it suits Sam’s ends.
Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?
Oof. Is there a part of Sam he likes about himself? That might be an easier question to answer (the answer being no). To narrow it down more concisely, Sam dislikes his own lack of agency. Even when making decisions for himself, it’s never really a decision confidently made (nor does he ever expect it to be upheld). In general, Sam has spent his entirely life being openly or covertly manipulated. Between the destiny of Sam’s involvement, allegedly written into the universe, and the calculating approach of those closest to him (including himself), there are times when Sam isn’t sure if he’s not anything more than a vessel for use against others.
What is their sign, and why?
The Hermit. Being that Sam is quite good at self-isolation (to the point where he can convince himself he’s alone in a room of caring, loving people), this sign makes the most sense. It’s particularly important to note that while Sam does qualify, he does maintain close relationships despite this, but is often “re-charged” in solitude, so it’s as much a choice as it is a necessity.
